First Veronica Top 40 broadcast

15th October 1959

Meeting of radio dealers held at the  Krasnapolsky Hotel, Amsterdam, which led to the idea of starting an offshore commercial radio station to serve Dutch listeners

16th November 1959

A further meeting of shareholders is held to hear a ‘test broadcast’, which turned out to be a sham

9th December 1959

A former German lightship,  Borkum Riff purchased by VRON

20th April 1960

Borkum Riff, now fitted out as a radio ship leaves Emden, West Germany

21st April 1960

Borkum Riff anchors off  Katwijk aan Zee  and begins test transmissions for Radio Veronica

6th May 1960

Regular programmes start for Radio Veronica

13th May 1960

Radio Veronica leaves the air to adjust its equipment after complaints of interference and being jammed by the PTT

15th May 1960

Radio Veronica  returns on 1562kHz (192m).

** June 1960

Panama withdraws registration of Borkum Riff. Ship re-registered in Guatemala

** November 1960

The Verweij  brothers Dirk, Jaap and 'Bull', take over responsibility for the management Radio Veronica and inject much needed financial support.

A listeners’ club  - Vrienden van Veronica (Friends of Veronica) established

1964

16th November 1964

Borkum Riff replaced by the larger and more luxurious Nordeney







8th October 1959 Conservatives under Harold Macmillan win the British general election

1st December 1959 Twelve countries sign a treaty that makes Antarctica a scientific preserve and bans military activity





21st April 1960

Brazil inaugurated its new capital, Brasilia, transferring the seat of national government from Rio de Janeiro.

16th May 1960

Soviet leader Khrushchev demands an apology from US President Eisenhower for the U-2 spy plane intrusion into the Soviet Union.










17th July 1962  

The last atomic bomb is tested above ground in Nevada, USA.









25th November 1964

Eleven nations gave a total of $3 billion to rescue the value of the British pound





14th January 1965 The prime ministers of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland meet for the first time in 43 years..
